Deathstroke July 2019 Solicitation

We already know about an appearance in Batman Universe this summer, let's see what's going on in Deathstroke's own title.
Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
Art by FERNANDO PASARIN
Cover by ED BENES and RICHARD FRIEND
Variant cover by DAVID FINCH
In the wake of Slade Wilson’s death, a new Deathstroke has vowed to complete his last, unfinished assignment. But the master assassin Shado has plans of her own, looking to step in for the late, great World’s Greatest Assassin and usurp his place in villainous hierarchy.
Meanwhile, Rose Wilson discovers the identity of the person responsible for her father’s death. Can her brother, Jericho, stop her from seeking vengeance?
Also in this issue, Slade Wilson’s son Jericho accepts Lex Luthor’s offer of power—but he’s determined to use it as a force for good…so why is Lex smiling?

Lots going on there...

So Shado, eh? There's a name I didn't expect to read. I don't recall any connection between the two of even if they've ever met. I'm only vaguely familiar with her so let's get a breif bio, courtesy of the DC Fandom Data Base.
Shado is an enemy, ally, and lover to Green Arrow. Her father was a member of the Yakuza, and she became a bow-wielding assassin to avenge her parents. Despite her selfish motivations, she has teamed up with Green Arrow and encouraged him to execute his targets. She is also known to have raped Green Arrow while he was delirious from fever. This allowed her to conceive a son, Robert Queen.
Sounds like sweetheart with similar parenting skills to Slade. Hope she stick around a while.

Deathstroke June 2019 solicitations

Looks like just one book in June but it should be an interesting one.

DEATHSTROKE #44
Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
Art by FERNANDO PASARIN
Cover by GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI and CAM SMITH
Variant cover by RICCARDO FEDERICI
“DEATHSTROKE: RIP” starts here!
Deathstroke is dead, secretly killed at the hands of a Teen Titan. As Slade’s closest friends, enemies and frenemies pay their respects (and disrespects) to the World’s Deadliest Assassin, some uninvited guests crash the event—the Legion of Doom! But what do they want with the body of the most lethal man on the planet? And will anyone find out who killed him? A brand-new storyline begins here…with an ending you won’t see coming!
ON SALE 06.05.19
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES

It's amusing to see comics news sites refer to a "spoiler" about Deathstroke's death in the solicitation. For one thing, it was quite clear from last month's solicitations that Robin had apparently killed Deathstroke at the end of the crossover with the Titans. For another, I think by now we all know that comics deaths are rather...temporary.

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing what Christopher Priest does with it. He's one of few writers that I trust to make a promise of "and ending you won't see coming" stick.

The Terminus Agenda Concludes in May

And it doesn't sound like it goes real well for our boy.
Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST and ADAM GLASS
Art and cover by CARLO PAGULAYAN and JASON PAZ
Variant cover by CLAYTON CRAIN
“The Terminus Agenda” finale!
It’s code red for the Teen Titans as their plan to capture and imprison Deathstroke has backfired in the worst possible way. Mercy Hall is on lockdown, and all the super-villains have escaped their cells!
As the villains team up to take down their captors, Deathstroke makes one final attempt at “fixing” Damian—will Damian finally abandon Batman’s code to save his friends from certain death?
ON SALE 05.01.19
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES

Strangely enough, the regular cover for the book seems to be a little tricky to find among solicitation listed on the major comics sites. Bleeding Cool displayed the page from the Previews catalogue though so I share that here since it's as good a version of it as I've come across.

But get a closer look at Clayton Crain's variant for this book. Damn!

It's not clear whether Deathstroke show up in the epilogue that takes place in Teen Titans #30. It doesn't sound like it, as that issue appears to me more geared towards blow back to Damian's actions in the Deathstroke issue. The cover alone makes that quite clear.

If writer Christopher Priest continues as he has, I suspect we'll get another 5-6 part story following starting in June with Slade's world properly shaken up as a result of this one's conclusion. Dude doesn't mess around!

Sounds like a blast!

It also sounds like Christopher Priest is hanging around for the foreseeable future. I have no reason to think otherwise but he has done such a marvelous job with this character that I dread the day he leaves him so I'm always on watch for some sign that he will.

Unlike the Lazarus Contract story from a couple of years ago, it doesn't appear that the other Titans team (the non-teen one) will be involved in this one. That's too bad because Deathstroke truly does not have much history with this Teen team. he's certainly built some with Damian Wayne at a rapid pace, as well, as kid Flash, but I don't believe he's had any interaction with the other members.

Also, I thought Slade Wilson's identity as Deathstroke was public anyway so I'm not sure what Gordon is actually revealing to anyone.  But then, maybe one of the great many universal reboots at DC has done away with all that. Who can keep track anymore?

Deathstroke 36 Solicitation

In addition to the team-up (or battle against, whatever) with Yogi Bear, Deathstroke's own title continues in October with issue 36. What's in store following his scrap with Batman? Let's find out, courtesy of First Comics News this time.

DEATHSTROKE #36
Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
Art by ED BENES
Cover by TYLER KIRKHAM
variant cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
“Deathstroke: Arkham” starts here!

After being declared criminally insane, Deathstroke is committed to the infamous Arkham Asylum! It isn’t long before the hunter becomes the hunted as Slade, powerless and weaponless, is targeted by some of Gotham City’s most wanted. But after initially mocking and contravening the system meant to help him, Deathstroke learns that his only hope for survival may be to confront his own inner demons.
ON SALE 10.03.18
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES
I had a moment of thinking "this again" until it struck me that...Deathstroke has never been in Arkham. The closest he's come is being included in a couple of the Arkham series of video games. And why should he be? He's not insane no matter what the solicitation text says, though clearly someone makes a convincing argument.

Variant cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
In this corner: Deathstroke, suffering from a traumatic brain injury at the hands of Batman! In the other corner: Batman, with Deathstroke’s knife in his gut! If they’re going to escape, Batman and Slade are going to have to work together.

I believe this is the final part of the Batman vs Deathstroke mini-series-within-a-series. We'll wait and see if the Deathstroke title can retain some of the additional readership it picked up as a result of the bat's guest-appearance.

Deathstroke #34 Solicitation

Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
Art by CARLO PAGULAYAN and JASON PAZ
Cover by ROBSON ROCHA and DANIEL HENRIQUES
Variant cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
It’s part five of “Batman vs. Deathstroke,” and “The Stormy Present” finds our two marquee combatants locked in the Batcave, forced to resolve their differences—or die trying! The showdown only turns saltier when the feds seize Bruce Wayne’s assets, including Wayne Manor, after Slade drops a dime. And Deathstroke shows Batman he’s not the only detective in town, as Slade closes in on the mystery of his relationship with Robin.
ON SALE 08.01.18
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES

I mentioned in the post about the solicitation for #33 that I'd want to have a look at the sales figures for the first installment of this six-part story. Based on what is provided by Comichron, issue 31 sold almost 39,000 copies. I don't believe that digital sales and such are included. That's good for 40th place for the month.

But is it good?  Only if the book can ride that momentum for a while. The previous issue sold well under 18,000 and placed 115th for the month. An intriguing guest-appearance by Batman and family is an excellent way to potentially showcase the book's quality to a new audience but it's going to have to stick. Those sales figures for #30 are about at the cancellation level.

That aside, Deathstroke will appear in the trade Paperback for Justice League: Justice Lost (issues 39-43 of the regular series) as well as Justice League: No Justice, both out in September.

Deathstroke #33 Solicitation

Aside from the Beach Blanket Special mentioned a few days ago, Deathstroke's 33rd issue hits stores in July as the second half of the Deathstroke vs. Batman storyline begins.

Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
Art by CARLO PAGULAYAN and JASON PAZ
Cover by ROBSON ROCHA and DANIEL HENRIQUES
Cariant cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
Forced to team with Deathstroke, a man he loathes, Damian Wayne must discover the truth of his lineage. Is he really Bruce Wayne’s son, or is Slade Wilson his true father? As Batman draws closer to finding them both, Deathstroke must complete a hit, while Robin shadows the killer for hire.
ON SALE 07.04.18
$3.99 US | 32 PAGES
Despite getting terrific reviews, Deathstroke's sales totals were starting to tickle cancellation territory, based on March results on Comichron. I'm going to make a point to see how much of a bump the Batman guest-appearance gives him in April.

The amount of anticipation I felt for The Lazarus Contract is dwarfed by how much I look forward to the Deathstroke vs Batman story within the Deathstroke book.

We already knew about Deathstroke being involved in Justice League: No Justice as a member of Team Entropy. Here's a look at the wraparound cover for that book.

And the surprise revelation this month is a hardcover omnibus of volume three.

DEATHSTROKE BY TONY S. DANIEL OMNIBUS HC

Tony S. Daniel’s entire run of DEATHSTROKE is collected in one hardcover!
Slade Wilson’s life is turned upside down after he learns that his involvement in a top-secret mission was wiped from his memory. Now a mysterious enemy known as Odysseus has targeted Deathstroke and everyone involved in the decade-old mission. But Slade’s journey leads him to Gotham City—and into conflict with both Batman and Harley Quinn!
Includes DEATHSTROKE #1-20, DEATHSTROKE ANNUAL #1-2 and a story from DC SNEAK PEEK: DEATHSTROKE #1.
On sale OCTOBER 24 • 560 pg, FC, $75.00 US • ISBN: 978-1-4012-8475-6
Interesting. There's no doubt that Mr. Daniels has his fair share of fans but I didn't think this run warranted a hardcover omnibus. It has its moments and the art is often spectacular but much of the material, which was mostly inconsistent with the character's history, appears to have been cast aside with DC's Rebirth. I get that they want to give Deathstroke the proverbial "push" over the next few months/years but doing it partially through this series seems peculiar.

Good News / Bad News Delivered by Bleeding Cool

First the bad news: It should have struck me that a Batman/Deathstroke book to accompany Deathstroke's regular series was too good to be true, but I was blinded by hopeful optimism. Alas, it it instead a story-within-the-series.

It seems like a hell of a tale, though. Right-click the image below and open it in a new tab (and thanks again to BC for providing the information in this format, I love that).

Deathstroke vs. Batman” part one! Beginning this month, a six-issue series-within-a-series featuring the ultimate showdown between DC’s fiercest rivals!
When Batman discovers a mysterious package containing DNA test results proving that he is not Damian Wayne’s biological father, the Dark Knight sets his sights on his son’s true father — Deathstroke! But Damian Wayne can’t really be Slade Wilson’s son — can he? And who sent the package — and why? The ultimate custody battle ensues as the World’s Greatest Detective and the World’s Deadliest Assassin clash in this instant classic!
Rose and Damian as brother and sister. Hilarious. I can't wait for this.

The good news is that Deathstroke does make a guest appearance in another book in April. It was a matter of time, really.

Written by Dan Abnett, art by Viktor Bogdanovic, cover by John Romita Jr. and Sandra Hope.
“Payback Time,” part one!

The Silencer has been targeted by every hit man, meta-mobster and weapons-depot dropout that the Leviathan organization has to offer — now it’s time for Honor Guest to take the fight back to them! Too bad Deathstroke has other plans.
Silencer squares off against Slade Wilson as we kick off a brand-new epic! And this duo’s devastating past run-in will leave you speechless!
32 pages, $2.99, in stores on April 25.
That cover makes it look like the barrel of her gun is nearly poking out of the back of his head!

There's potential there for Deathstroke to hang around for a few issues so let's keep an eye out for that. I'mcurious about this character anyway so if he showed up in the back end of a trade, I'd be all over that.

Our favourite mass murdered also see the fourth book of volume one reprints, called Crash Or Burn, released on May 9th.
Deathstroke returns in these 1990s tales to battle the Vigilante, Fire and Blood, and Janissary!
Then, Slade Wilson must enter the Black Dome — and he might not make it out alive.
Collects Deathstroke, The Terminator #21-25, plus Deathstroke, The Terminator Annual #2, featuring the origin of Gunfire!
If there's one character more forgettable than Gunfire, it's certainly Janissary. That was his one and only appearance.

And on top of all that, he will appear in a Titans trade paperback reprinting the dismal Total Chaos storyline that crossed over the Titans family of books at the time.0
A threat from the future has come to the present to destroy the Titans: Donna Troy’s son, Lord Chaos! Bringing with him a futuristic army, the would-be hero turned despot faces Titans past and present in the heroes’ greatest conflict to date. However, when the battle becomes too much for even these super-teams, will they be able to turn to their greatest foe, Deathstroke, for assistance?

This timeless crossover from one of the greatest creative teams of all time is finally here! Collects New Titans #90-92, Deathstroke, the Terminator #14-16 and Team Titans #1-3.
Get it for Nightwing's mullet. I'm pretty sure he was still rocking that thing at that point.

And finally, he has significant involvement in the New Teen Titans Omnibus hardcover third volume.
In this third massive collection of the hit 1980s series, now back in print, the team battles the villainy of H.I.V.E., faces the evil Dr. Light, witnesses the trial of Deathstroke, and tries to rescue the dark hero known as Raven from her own father, Trigon.
Collects Tales of The Teen Titans #42-68, The New Teen Titans (second series) #1-9 and Tales of The Teen Titans Annual #3.
336 pages! If you're buying specifically for Slade, you might want to track down a trade of The Judas Contract and leave it that. The trial is entirely forgettable. Almost as forgettable as Gunfire. Most of the rest of the material doesn't include Deathstroke at all.

Still, a pretty high-profile month for him. That's always comforting.

Deathstroke Vs. Batman

Credit to Bleeding Cool.

Looking forward to an official announcement for this when the April solicitations are revealed. I assumed it's a mini-series and not a replacement to the regular Deathstroke title. To my knowledge, Deathstroke still sells well enough to continue for a while longer.

I'm curious as to the reason for the feud as well. It isn't as though these two haven't crossed paths numerous times in the past. They did in the City of Assassins story from volume one (issues 6 to 9) and in issue 4 of volume three in early 2015. Sandwiched between the two was a lengthy scrap in Detective Comics 710 in 1997, the cover to which, interestingly, was also done by Lee Weeks.

More recently, Deathstroke (and Deadshot) appeared briefly in part 3 of The War Of Jokes And Riddles in the main Batman book...

...and of course Batman also showed up in Deathstroke's current book. And that encounter was pure genius. Two strategic masterminds "fighting" one another without throwing a punch. It had been quite some time since I'd read something that cleverly done.

Christopher Priest wrote that issue so naturally expectations will be high for the Deathstroke/Batman book. He's set himself a high bar but there's every reason to believe he'll deliver.

No longer wearing the black and white outfit for this cover...

And our boy shows up in at least one issue of Justice League, though he may take something of a back seat to one of the co-stars from his own series!

Art by PETE WOODS
Cover by DAVID YARDIN
Variant cover by J.G. JONES
“JUSTICE LOST” part two!

What does justice mean in a lawless world? This is the question the team must struggle with when the League finds itself trapped between warring factions, helpless refugees and mercenaries with advanced weaponry, all manipulated by Deathstroke’s frenemy the Red Lion.

Meanwhile, Batman forces a showdown between himself and the League’s biggest fan.

The solicitation for April's trades was also made available. We've known for a while that the fourth book from the current volume would be released that month, but the text specifies that it "Collects DEATHSTROKE #21-25 and a story from the DC UNIVERSE HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1."  I wasn't aware of that last part.

Deathstroke #27 Davis Variant

I've quietly been updating the various pages above with additional variant cover art and solicitation material, including the one for Rose Wilson. One of the covers I'd copied was of poor quality so while trying to find a higher quality one, I came across the variant for #27, by Shane Davis, as usual, and available next month. I believe I first saw it on Bleeding Cool. Enjoy!

February 2018 Deathstroke Solication

There's always a moment of incredulity when the Deathstroke solicitations are made available. Christopher Priest is amazing at somehow taking Deathstroke in all sorts of new places while remaining true to the character. One of these days, his name will not be attached to this title and it will be devastating.

And with that, let's check out the solicitation for #28, due for February.
DEATHSTROKE #28
Written by CHRISTOPHER PRIEST
Art by DIOGENES NEVES and TREVOR SCOTT
Cover by RYAN SOOK
Variant cover by SHANE DAVIS and MICHELLE DELECKI
“Chinatown” part one! In the aftermath of the shocking events of this year’s Deathstroke Annual, Slade finds himself at a crossroads as his ad hoc “Dark Titans” team dissolves and even Wintergreen finally abandons him. Slade begins a turbulent backslide to his old ways, bringing him face to face with China’s New Super-Man!
On sale FEBRUARY 7 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T+

This super-Man looks to be getting a bit of a push (to use a wrestling term) that month as his own book gets re-titled and becomes a team book. Cool to see Deathstroke as part of the process.
